73 imagesAfter a fire in 1904 wiped out 60 businesses, the northern Montana town of Havre moved underground while they rebuilt the town. Today you can take a tour through the reconstructed spaces under the town which include a brothel, chinese laundry and opium den, saloon, and dentist office. A railroad museum is also upstairs where you buy your tickets. More info here: http://prairiepopulist.org/havre-beneath-streets-1/

16 imagesIn the summer of ’74 I went to day camp and heard my first ghost stories up on a wooded hill that looked out over a state psychiatric hospital that was fully operational at the time. In 2004 after it had been shuttered, but before it was completely demolished, I stopped by for a visit. Marlboro Psychiatric Center in Marlboro, NJ, photographed in 2004 before demolition and 16 years after it was closed.
